LexisNexis Opt Out: How to Remove Yourself From LexisNexis (2026)

6 min read

LexisNexis is one of the largest data brokers in the United States. Most people associate the name with legal research software used by attorneys. That is a separate product. LexisNexis Risk Solutions, their data broker arm, sells detailed consumer profiles to background check companies, financial institutions, insurance providers, law firms, and government agencies. If you have ever applied for a loan, rented an apartment, or had a background check run on you, there is a good chance LexisNexis data was involved.

What LexisNexis Collects on You

  • Full name, date of birth, and Social Security Number fragments
  • Current and past home addresses
  • Phone numbers and email addresses
  • Court and criminal records
  • Property ownership and deed records
  • Financial history and liens
  • Professional licenses and employment history
  • Relatives and known associates
  • Vehicle registration records

Because LexisNexis sells to so many downstream services, your data here can surface in places you would not expect. Removing it at the source reduces what those services can pull on you.

How to Opt Out of LexisNexis: Step-by-Step

  1. 1Go to optout.lexisnexis.com in your browser. This is the official LexisNexis Consumer Center opt-out portal.
  2. 2Click "Begin Opt-Out" or the equivalent button to start the process.
  3. 3Enter your full legal name, current address, and date of birth.
  4. 4You will be asked to upload a copy of a government-issued photo ID — a driver's license or passport works. This step is required.
  5. 5You may also be asked to confirm the last four digits of your Social Security Number for additional identity verification.
  6. 6Review the details you have entered and submit the form.
  7. 7LexisNexis will send a confirmation to the email address you provide. Keep that email as a record.
  8. 8Allow up to 30 days for the removal to process. You can follow up through the portal if you do not see confirmation after that window.

About the ID Upload Requirement

LexisNexis requires a copy of your government-issued ID before they process any removal. This is not optional. Take a clear, well-lit photo of your driver's license or passport. Both sides may be required for a driver's license.

You can redact your photo and ID number from the image before uploading — what they need is your name, address, and date of birth to match your record. Use any image editor or a free tool like Preview on macOS to black out those fields.

What the Opt-Out Does and Does Not Cover

The consumer opt-out removes your data from LexisNexis Risk Solutions' commercial data products. These are the databases sold to private businesses like insurance carriers, lenders, and tenant screening companies.

It does not apply to data held for law enforcement agencies, courts, or government clients. LexisNexis operates entirely separate databases for those customers, and consumer opt-out requests have no effect on them. It also does not remove the original public records that LexisNexis sourced the data from.

Will Your Data Come Back?

It can. LexisNexis pulls from public record sources on a rolling basis. If new court filings, property transfers, or address changes appear in public databases, that information can re-enter their system. The opt-out is not permanent. Plan to check back every six months or so if you want to stay off their commercial records. LexisNexis is one of hundreds of data brokers operating in the US; see our background check opt-out guide for a broader list of sites to tackle.
